TL:DR - the book shows it very little to do with a rich/poor dichonomy but something else entirely. The inviting back therefore has little to do with the rich/poor thing, but more to do with realising that losing the other would be worse than letting a little bit of honour/duty go. There is more back and forth between the two of them in the book while Marius is out of home (Marius goes to the grandfather to try help stop Cosette from leaving for England) and it shows the conflict of both of them wanting to get back together but Marius believing he has a duty to his father's memory, and the grandfather having a duty to the King. Marius then became poor and started to get into the rebellion etc. because of this he started looking into his fathers life and tried claim the title of Duke. he then found out about why he never saw his father and also that his father would watch him from a distance. it was only as he was dying that Marius found out about his father and went to him.

The grandfather made the father never see Marius or else he would disinherit him. In the book he is abandoned by his grandfather for completely different reasons that make a little more sense as to why he returns.īasically his grandfather is a monarchist, while his father fought for Napoleon and was made a duke (there is also an interesting link between the father and the Thenardiers that goes into Marius' actions later, all of which is skipped in the movie). The entire scene was gorgeous and gave me goose bumps. And yes, I cried when Samantha Barks (Eponine) sang On My Own. He seemed to bring more to the character than just blind love. I also thought that Eddie Redmayne was the BEST Marius I have seen yet. Hugh Jackman did such an amazing job with his acting, I could easily overlook his rendition of Bring Him Home, which I felt he preformed decently, but was no where near as good as Alfie Boe's version (this is just an opinion, of course). Although, in the beginning of the movie, I felt he wasn't solid enough in his contempt for lawlessness. He did a very good job of showing the inner conflict Javert's character experiences. Russell Crowe on the other hand disappointed me in his singing, but I did like his portrayal of the character.

She captured the emotions of the character so well, I shed quite a few tears over her death. It is my opinion that Anne Hathaway did a marvelous job playing Fantine. I am a big Les Miserable fan, though, so I may be biased.
